Low-Phosphorus Foods (Better Choices in CKD)

1. Dairy Alternatives

  • Rice milk (unenriched, no phosphate additives)

  • Almond milk (check labels for no added phosphate)

  • Oat milk (additive-free versions)

  • Non-dairy creamers without “phos-” ingredients


2. Protein Sources

  • Fresh chicken, turkey, or beef (not marinated or processed)

  • Fresh fish (cod, tilapia, sole) without bones or additives

  • Eggs (egg whites are lowest in phosphorus)

  • Tofu (plain, not pre-seasoned with additives)


3. Fruits (naturally low in phosphorus)

  • Apples, pears, peaches, plums

  • Grapes, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries

  • Pineapple, watermelon, cherries

  • Canned fruit in juice (not syrup with additives)


4. Vegetables (fresh or frozen, no sauces)

  • Lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, cabbage

  • Cauliflower, green beans, carrots, peppers

  • Asparagus, onions, mushrooms

  • Summer squash


5. Grains & Starches

  • White rice

  • White bread, Italian bread, pita bread

  • Regular pasta (not whole wheat)

  • Unsalted crackers, rice cakes

  • Corn tortillas, grits, cream of wheat

  • Water

  • Clear sodas (ginger ale, lemon-lime)

  • Herbal teas (non-phosphate containing)

  • Fruit juice (apple, grape, cranberry)


7. Snacks & Treats

  • Unsalted popcorn (air-popped, plain)

  • Rice cakes

  • Sugar cookies, vanilla wafers (without phosphate additives)

  • Sherbet or fruit ice

  • Hard candies (not chocolate-based)


Patient Tip: Choosing fresh, home-prepared meals instead of packaged or processed foods is the best way to keep phosphorus low. Always check ingredient labels and avoid items with “phos-” in the ingredient list.
